Data Cabling in Stockport: What Local Businesses Need to Know

The Short Run: Getting data cabling right in Stockport comes down to a few decisions made before anyone pulls a cable: the right category for the work you actually do, a proper site survey, and full testing and certification at the end. Skimp on any of those and you pay for it later in downtime and rework.


Stockport is in the middle of the biggest town centre regeneration in the country. And here’s where a lot of it goes wrong: the cabling gets treated as an afterthought, squeezed into the end of a fit-out when the budget’s already tight and the deadline’s already close. That’s the moment corners get cut, and cabling is the one part of the building you really don’t want to redo.

Pick the cable category for the work you actually do


The category of cable you install sets the ceiling on your network for the next decade or more. Get it wrong at the start and you’re either paying too much now or ripping it out early.

The honest version looks like this. Cat5e still moves 1 gigabit per second and it’s fine for a small office running email, cloud apps and a few VoIP phones. Cat6 gives you more headroom and better resistance to crosstalk. Cat6a is where most serious commercial installs sit now, because it carries 10 gigabits over the full 100-metre run and it’s what you want feeding Wi-Fi access points and anything data-heavy.


Cat5e was fine in 2010. For a growing business fitting out new space in 2026, it usually isn’t. The gap in installed cost between Cat6 and Cat6a is small compared to the cost of pulling it all out in three years because you outgrew it. If you’re doing the work anyway, install the capacity you’ll want later, not just the capacity you need today.


The right answer depends on your building, your device density and what you’re planning to run over the network. Start with a real site survey, not a square-footage quote

You can’t spec a cabling job properly from a floor plan and a total square footage. Older Stockport buildings, and there are plenty in and around the town centre, throw up things a drawing won’t show: thick internal walls, awkward riser routes, existing containment that’s already full, comms rooms in the wrong place.


A proper site survey walks the building. It works out where the cabinet goes, how the runs get from there to each desk, camera and access point, and whether any single run is going to breach the 100-metre limit for copper. Past that limit, performance drops and you need fibre or a second cabinet. It flags the access issues, the working-at-height points and the bits that’ll need out-of-hours work so you’re not disrupting a live floor.


Get this stage right and the install is boring, in the best possible way. Skip it, and the surprises turn up on installation day when they’re expensive to fix.


Insist on testing, certification and documentation


This is the part that separates a proper job from a cheap one, and it’s the part you can’t see once the ceiling tiles go back.


Every cable run should be tested end to end and certified. That means a proper certification test on each drop, not a quick continuity check. You should be handed a full set of results, a labelled patch schedule and a floor plan showing where every outlet lands. That documentation is what makes the network maintainable: when something goes wrong in two years, whoever’s fixing it can find the fault in minutes instead of tracing cables by hand.

Certification also protects your warranty. On a properly installed and certified structured cabling system, you should expect a 25-year manufacturer warranty on the cabling. Without the test results, that warranty is worth very little.


It’s worth remembering what the new grade-A space in town is being built to. The latest Stockport Exchange offices went in with high-speed fibre infrastructure as a headline feature, because reliable connectivity is now a baseline expectation, not an extra. What good looks like


A good Stockport install is quiet, tidy and documented. The cabinet is neat, every cable is labelled, the runs are inside proper containment rather than draped over ceiling grids, and the whole thing is tested and handed over with paperwork. The engineers turn up qualified for the actual work, including working at height in a warehouse or industrial unit, and where the job would disrupt a working office, they do the noisy parts out of hours or at the weekend.

A few things catch people out more than others.


Fitting out an older building often means the existing cabling is a mix of generations, badly labelled and not worth keeping. Budget to strip it out rather than patch into it. Trying to save a day by reusing tired Cat5e usually costs more than it saves.


Moving into a multi-floor or multi-building site changes the maths. Copper runs are capped at 100 metres, so anything longer needs a fibre optic backbone between cabinets or buildings. Plan that in early, because it affects where the comms rooms go.
